Dad’s Irresistible Dip

WHAT'S SPECIAL

This irresistible, rich, and creamy dip comes together in minutes and requires just a few easy to have on hand ingredients.

My Mom did most of the cooking growing up, but my Dad had a few favorite things he’d make on weekends. He’d poach eggs and fry up Jimmy Dean sausage, bread and fry oysters, and loved to bake salmon, make baked potatoes, and chicken pot pies. Best of all, he made his signature dip, which is truly irresistible. Dad would hide what he was doing from us kids while he made it, hovering over the bowl so as not to reveal the ingredients or technique, or telling us to leave the kitchen! We couldn’t wait to dive in and it would quickly be devoured. He kept the recipe secret until we were well into adulthood, and then he finally decided to share it – even wrote it down for my sister Marni in his distinctive all-cap script.  (Come to think of it, I often write in all caps, too…). He passed a few years back and I confess my world has not been the same since. But whenever I miss him, his wisdom, his winning smile, and contagious laugh, I find it helps me to make one of his favorite foods and imagine he’s here sharing it with me, and think what we’d talk about. Today would have been his 86th birthday, so I made Dad’s Irresistible Dip, and am raising a glass to my hero. Happy Birthday, Semper Fi and Cheers to you, Daddy!

Equipment

  • small mixing bowl
  • fork and/or small spatula, or spoon

Ingredients

  • 8 oz block of Philidelphia Cream Cheese or other cream cheese of choice
  • 5 shakes A-1 Steak Sauce or Worcestershire sauce
  • 5 squirts fresh squeezed lemon juice about 5 teaspoons, more to taste
  • 1/4 tsp onion salt to taste

  • 1 big bag favorite crispy potato chips for serving

Instructions

  • Cube up your cream cheese and let sit out for a few minutes to soften.
  • Add a little milk and start to mash together with a fork.
  • Add A-1 sauce, lemon juice, onion salt and garlic salt and continue to mash together with fork and/or small spatula.
  • This may take a few minutes and some elbow grease to get creamy! Add a little more milk if it's too thick, and continue to stir until desired consistency. Serve with your favorite crispy potato chips.
  • If there is any left after, store in an air tight container for up to one week.

Notes

This dip is also yummy served with fresh vegetable crudite!

I remember this dip from when we would visit. All of us kids would just stand there and eat it until it was all gone. It was so good!!!!

Started off my Superbowl party for 2+dog with this recipe for Dad’s Irresistible Dip and it was delicious and yes, irresistible! I always used to make dip by mixing a package of Lipton‘s onion soup mix and sour cream, never again… (BTW, I made a whole menu of Kirsty’s recipes for my Superbowl party for 2: Dad’s Irresistible Dip, Simplest Pureed Carrot Soup, Wild Rice Salad, and Yogurt-Pesto Marinated Chicken… a great combo! Thanks, Kirsty!)
